City History
Dvur Kralove is situated in the north east of the Czech Republic in the foothills of the Krkonose Mountains. The town was founded in the year 1270 and has a rich history. Many historical monuments have been preserved in the town and its surroundings. Dvur Kralove is well known for the so called Rukopis kralovedvorsky, a manuscript that had an important impact on the development of the Czech nation. However its authenticity has been disputed to this day. The town also has a rich industrial tradition based mainly on the textile and machinery industry.
Dvur Kralove nad Labem is renowned for its ZOO as well. There is also a safari with free-range animals. At the beginning of the year 1998 a new pavilion was opened with free-flying exotic birds.
Although the town Dvur Kralove nad Labem does not belong among the great towns, it has nevertheless about 17 thousend inhabitants; it abounds with a gret number of historical, cultural and artistic sights and monuments. It has magnificent surroundings and attractive sites, which draw the interest of thousand of visitors each year. Among the outstanding sights belong doubtless the near castle Kuks, erected by other of the count F.A. Spork. In front of the castle created the famous sculptor Matyas Bernard Braun a series of statues. Amonkg the most remakables belong two series of statues – 12 feminine statues of virtues and 12 of vices. Worthful is also a gallry of plastic art, called Bethlehem carved into sundstone rocks in the near forest. Another sightseeing object represents the moust beautiful dam on the river Labe, wich horizont is dominated by the hill Zvicina, wich offers, provided good visibility, an overlook of a quarter of Bohemia including the panorama of the highest mountain ridge of Bohrmia – Krkonose – The Giant Mountains. The bearby village Bila Tremesna was in 1628 the last but one stay of Jan Amos Komensky (Comenius) before he left the caste of Hornˇ Brann into the Polish exile of the town Lesno. In the center of Dvur Kralove nad Labem ist situated in valley the East-Bohemian Zoological Garten, remowned both at home and abroad thanks to Safari, inhabiting a unique gallery of paintings of the famous painter Zdenek Burian, acquainting the visitors wich the evolution of life on our Planet. Dvur Kralove nad Labem, once the foundation towen of the Bohemian Queens, at present one of the centers of the textile industry of the East. A historical town hall, built after the great fire of the town in the year 1572. The inscription on the front-side reads: This house hates injustice, loves peace, pinishes crimes, conserves right, venerates honest people. The Virgin Mary columm from the year 1754 and freeman's houses from the first half of the 18th century. The building of the municipal baths und monument of the insurrection, erected in the year 1922.This baroque building was built F. A. Berger, the administrator of the estate of the count F.A. Spork in the year 1738. For 120 years already serves this theatre building, built in the style of neorenaissance for theatre perfonmances – called Hankuv dum.
A pleasant recov ery offers the modern swimming bath named in honor of Dr. Tyrs. Today exist only one of the former four towers of the town fortifications. It is situated at the former northern gate. The most beautiful dam on the Labe, finished in 1919. It is protected as a technical monument.
An outstanding monument of baroque architecture – the caste Kuks with statues of Matyas Bernard Braun. Well known are the 12 feminine figures of virtues and 12 figures of vices. As the top-masterpiece of M.B. Braun in now being evaluated the gallery of plastic art, so called Bethlehem. The plastc figures had been carved into sandstones-rocks, situatet in the forest.The hill Zvicina is offering a splendid view of the landscape and the mountain-chain Krkonose. The church of the St. John, the Baptist.
Thereafter was the church many times reconstructed. The present church is an important cultural-and architectural monument. In the vault of the tower (see sketh) found Vaclav Hanka the so called Manuscript kralovedvorsky – manuscript of the town Dvur Kralove nad Labem. On the right hand are still the remnants of the original romanic small church.
Thus according to a drawing shovn in the chronicle of the town Dvur Kralove nad Labem looked like in the year 1703. Documents providing the origin of the town have not been preserved; they have been destroyed due to numerous fires. The town was for the first time mentioned in written as a court – Curia in the entry from the year 1270. According to the remnants of the town fortification and the preserved ground-plan of the center of the town are we able to from some conception of the course of life of our an cestors in the past.
On the surface of 72 hectares is the habitat of more than 1.900 animals. With almost 290 species belongs the ZOO-Safari to the biggest Zoological Gartens in Europe. It was appointed as a Europan coordinator of the internacional breeding programme for the wite rhinoceros. It participates in international projects for the protection of endangered species. Within the ZOO there had been installed a permanent exhibition (gallery) of paintings of the renown painter Zdenek Burian, demonstrating to the public the evolution of life on our planet Earth.
